Campaigners say they’re decided to maintain combating plans for 196 new properties on a former zoo web site.
The properties are set to be constructed subsequent 12 months on the former Bristol Zoo Gardens web site, after the zoo moved moved its web site to the Bristol Wild Place Challenge.
The plans have been met with opposition, however will go forward after the federal government determined to not intervene.
Bristol Zoological Society stated the scheme would shield bushes and convey much-needed housing for town.
Campaigners from Save Bristol Zoo Gardens had hoped the proposal can be “known as in” by the Secretary of State.
‘Dreadful proposal’
A spokesperson from the marketing campaign group says the transfer was a “disappointing, however not surprising resolution.”
Campaigners say has been “huge opposition” towards the scheme, and a petition launched in 2022 acquired over 10,000 signatures.
In a press release, a spokesperson from the charity stated: “We might have welcomed a call-in by the Secretary of State, as that may have opened the way in which for the Zoo’s dreadful proposal to destroy the backyard web site to have been checked out once more at a Public Inquiry.”
Save Bristol Zoo Gardens say the choice doesn’t alter their opposition to the zoo’s plans or their “willpower to verify they don’t go forward.”
Bristol Zoo Gardens, run by the Bristol Zoological Charity, opened in 1836 and was the fifth oldest zoo on this planet.
Campaigners argue that the event is “extremely inappropriate” and a “ridiculous proposal for a conservationist charity”.
Hannah Windross, director of individuals and public engagement at Bristol Zoological Society stated the scheme will convey much-needed housing for Bristol.
The plans inclide 196 properties – of which 20% can be 30 social lease properties and 10 properties for first time consumers.
In a written assertion, Ms Windross stated: “Our proposals have been rigorously developed to lead to 36% biodiversity web acquire and high-grade bushes on the location can be actively protected.
“The Society has put in place 29 Tree Safety Orders for the prime quality, class A bushes, and 470 new bushes can be planted, which exceeds the tree substitute commonplace.”
